Synopsis

Christopher Columbus seeks royal backing for a westward voyage to Asia, persuading Queen Isabella of Castile to finance his risky expedition. After crossing the Atlantic, he reaches the Caribbean and establishes a settlement, imagining a new society shaped by exploration and coexistence. Political rivalries, colonial ambition, violence, and resistance gradually undermine his idealistic vision of paradise.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The film was released in 1992 to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Columbus' first voyage. Its French release date was October 12, exactly 500 years after the expedition's reported landfall in the Caribbean.
  • The production had a reported budget of $47 million, but its United States theatrical release earned only about $7.2 million.
  • The replicas of the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria were built in Spain between 1990 and 1992. The ships retraced Columbus' first-voyage route during the anniversary celebrations and were later placed on public display in Palos de la Frontera.
  • Vangelis composed the score after Hans Zimmer was initially associated with the project. The soundtrack later became far more successful than the film, particularly after the title theme was adopted for sporting events and rose to the top of the German singles chart.
  • The film appeared in theaters less than two months after the separate Columbus adventure Christopher Columbus: The Discovery, another major 1992 production created for the quincentenary.
  • Paramount released a shortened United States version to secure a PG-13 rating. The film's historical presentation was also criticized for repeating or reinforcing popular myths about Columbus and the period.
