Factoids & Trivia

  • The film is based on the second novel in E.L. James' Fifty Shades trilogy and was released in the United States on February 10, 2017, shortly before Valentine's Day.
  • The screenplay was written by Niall Leonard, E.L. James' husband, replacing the writer of the first film.
  • Kim Basinger joined the series as Elena Lincoln, a character whose connection to Christian's past adds a more confrontational dimension to the story.
  • The masquerade benefit was designed as one of the film's major visual set pieces. Its production design and costumes received their own behind-the-scenes featurette on the home-video release.
  • The soundtrack was built around new and original songs intended to appear in the film. Its best-known single, "I Don't Wanna Live Forever," was performed by Taylor Swift and Zayn and became a major chart success.
  • Jamie Dornan volunteered to perform Christian's unusual gymnastics pose on a pommel horse because the production wanted to show the character's physical condition without using a conventional weightlifting scene.
  • The home-video release included an Unrated Edition with several additional minutes and more explicit alternate material.
