Synopsis

Sam Flynn, the rebellious son of missing technology visionary Kevin Flynn, follows a mysterious signal from his father's old arcade and is pulled into the digital world known as the Grid. There, he discovers that Kevin has been trapped for decades and that a powerful digital duplicate, Clu, plans to escape into the real world. Father and son must join forces to survive.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The sequel was initially developed under the working title "TR2N." Disney unveiled an early, nearly three-minute visual-effects test at the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con, where its surprise appearance and rave reception generated enough enthusiasm to help Disney decide to green-light a full production.
  • "Tron: Legacy" began as a 3D concept prototype rather than a completed screenplay. The test demonstrated the proposed visual style, including light cycles, digital environments, and a younger-looking version of Kevin Flynn.
  • Disney officially revealed the title TRON: Legacy and showed new footage on 2009 Comic-Con, including the scene of Sam entering the abandoned Flynn's Arcade.
  • The illuminated costumes used practical lighting built directly into the suits. Their brightness affected the entire production design, requiring the sets to be kept unusually dark so the glowing circuitry would register properly on camera.
  • Digital Domain created a computer-generated younger likeness of Jeff Bridges for Clu. The work built on facial-effects techniques developed for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," with Bridges' performance helping drive the digital character.
  • The film contained 1,565 visual-effects shots produced by six studios working across two continents. Its digital environments, vehicles, identity discs, and characters were created for stereoscopic 3D presentation.
  • Daft Punk composed the electronic score, which became one of the film's most widely recognized creative elements. The duo also appeared briefly in the film as masked DJs at the End of Line Club.
  • Disney released the film in Disney Digital 3D and IMAX 3D on December 17, 2010. Its production design, visual effects, and sound helped establish "Tron: Legacy" as a major modern reference point for the franchise.
  • The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound Editing. Its visual style also influenced later Disney attractions, including the Tron Lightcycle / Run roller coaster experiences at Shanghai Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
