Synopsis

Fifteen-year-old Tim leaves Berlin when his pilot father is sent to Somalia and moves in with his grandmother on a small North Sea island. After defending Eric from a local surfer clique, Tim earns the hostility of its leader, Lars. He then falls for Vic, Lars' girlfriend, and must overcome his fear of the water while fighting for friendship, independence, and first love.

Factoids & Trivia

• The film was shot from July 24 through September 14, 2007, in Hamburg, Amrum, Berlin, and Malta. Amrum provides the North Sea island setting and was used extensively for the production.

• Sommer was produced by SamFilm, the company behind the Die Wilden Kerle films. The project was developed specifically as a vehicle for teen star Jimi Blue Ochsenknecht and attracted more than one million German theatrical admissions.

• The movie received the German Film Rating Board's "Wertvoll" designation in 2008.

• Sommer was nominated for the 2009 German Film Award in the Best Children's and Youth Film category.

• Buena Vista International distributed the film theatrically in Germany, with its domestic release taking place on April 17, 2008.

• The home-video release included an audio commentary by Mike Marzuk and Jimi Blue Ochsenknecht, along with scenes that were not included in the finished film.
