Synopsis

In 1963, repeat offender Randle P. McMurphy avoids prison by claiming mental illness and is sent to a psychiatric hospital for evaluation. His rebellious spirit challenges the ward's rigid routines and authoritarian head nurse, Mildred Ratched. As McMurphy encourages the other patients to assert themselves, their brief taste of freedom brings him into escalating conflict with the institution.

Factoids & Trivia

• The film was shot inside Oregon State Hospital in Salem, the real psychiatric facility that inspired the novel's setting.

• Hospital superintendent Dean Brooks supported the production and played Dr. John Spivey. He also arranged for patients to serve as extras and production assistants; 89 patients were reportedly employed during filming.

• Ken Kesey wrote the original novel after working as a night aide at the Palo Alto Veterans Hospital. Actor Kirk Douglas acquired the stage and screen rights, but his son Michael Douglas ultimately produced the film.

• The production used three cameras during the group therapy scenes. This allowed the filmmakers to preserve spontaneous reactions between the performers instead of repeating the exchanges for separate angles.

• The film won all five major Academy Awards: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Adapted Screenplay. It was only the second film to achieve that sweep at the time.

• The Library of Congress added the film to the National Film Registry in 1993, recognizing it as culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

• The Oregon State Hospital location became closely associated with the film's legacy, while portions of the historic building were later preserved as part of the Oregon State Hospital Museum of Mental Health.
