Synopsis

During the American Civil War, bounty hunter Blondie and outlaw Tuco form an uneasy partnership while searching for a hidden Confederate fortune. Their trail collides with that of Angel Eyes, a ruthless mercenary who has learned part of the secret. Betrayals, shifting alliances, battlefield chaos, and a race across the desert lead the three men toward a deadly confrontation at Sad Hill Cemetery.

Factoids & Trivia

• Although set during the American Civil War, the film was shot primarily in Spain, including the Tabernas Desert in Almeria and locations in the provinces of Burgos, Madrid, and Granada.

• The production built the circular Sad Hill Cemetery near Santo Domingo de Silos specifically for the climactic three-way gunfight. The set originally contained thousands of crosses and gradually disappeared after filming before being restored decades later.

• Ennio Morricone's score uses distinct variations of its famous two-note motif for the three central characters. The music for the cemetery sequence, "The Ecstasy of Gold," later became strongly associated with Metallica, which adopted it as concert entrance music.

• "The Story of a Soldier" is performed within the film by prisoners of war during Tuco's torture. Its placement contrasts a gentle, communal song with the violence occurring nearby.

• The Italian premiere version ran approximately 177 minutes, while shorter international releases were distributed in several different lengths. MGM's early-2000s restoration reinstated much of the missing material, with new dialogue recordings by surviving performers.
