Synopsis

An elderly couple from the coastal town of Onomichi travel to Tokyo to visit their grown children and grandchildren. Expecting warmth and family time, they instead encounter the pressures of postwar urban life and the emotional distance of relatives absorbed in their own responsibilities. Their widowed daughter-in-law offers the most genuine kindness, prompting quiet reflections on aging, duty, and impermanence.

Factoids & Trivia

• The film was inspired by Leo McCarey's 1937 American drama Make Way for Tomorrow. Screenwriter Kogo Noda suggested the earlier film's premise, which Ozu and Noda reshaped for postwar Japan rather than adapting it directly.

• Ozu and Noda developed the screenplay over 103 days while staying at the Chigasakikan inn in Chigasaki. The production team then spent about a month scouting locations before filming began.

• Location work took place in Onomichi, Tokyo, Osaka, and Atami, while most interior scenes were filmed at Shochiku's Ofuna studio. The opening and closing images emphasize the contrast between Onomichi's quieter landscape and Tokyo's expanding urban environment.

• Although released in Japan on November 3, 1953, the film was slow to reach international audiences. It screened in London in 1957 and received the inaugural Sutherland Trophy at the 1958 London Film Festival.

• The daughter-in-law Noriko forms a loose link with the central characters played by Setsuko Hara in Late Spring and Early Summer, often leading the three films to be discussed together as a thematic trilogy.

• Tokyo Story has become a defining example of Ozu's restrained style, including low camera placement, deliberate pacing, and transitional images often known as "pillow shots."
