Synopsis

Death-row inmate Jack Conrad is taken from a corrupt Central American prison and transported to a remote island. There, he and nine other condemned prisoners discover they have been forced into a brutal contest that will be broadcast live over the Internet. The last survivor will earn freedom, but Conrad soon realizes that survival may require more than defeating the other contestants.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The film was produced through WWE Films and released by Lionsgate. WWE's corporate materials identified it as the company's third feature film.
  • Principal photography began on May 15, 2006. Although the story takes place in Central America, production used locations in Queensland, Australia, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Mount Tamborine, and Village Roadshow Studios in Oxenford.
  • The story originated with Rob Hedden and his brother Andy Hedden. Rob Hedden later wrote the screenplay with Scott Wiper, while the tie-in novel expanded the contestants' backgrounds and character histories.
  • The production's action work involved veteran martial artist and stunt coordinator Richard Norton. Norton also served as a stunt double for Vinnie Jones in some scenes.
  • The film's premise was promoted as a violent reality-show concept, reflecting the growing popularity of Internet video and live online broadcasting in the mid-2000s.
  • A novelization was published on April 2, 2007, shortly before the film's theatrical release. The soundtrack followed on April 24, 2007.
  • Released theatrically in the United States on April 27, 2007, the film earned approximately $8.6 million worldwide against a reported $20 million budget. It later became part of WWE Studios' home-video-oriented action legacy.
  • A standalone sequel, The Condemned 2, was released in 2015 with a different lead character and cast.
