After a painful breakup, Hollywood writer Carter Webb leaves Los Angeles to care for his ailing grandmother in suburban Michigan. Living across from the troubled Hardwicke family, he becomes involved in the lives of a mother and her daughters. As Carter offers advice and companionship, the unexpected relationships force him to confront heartbreak, family tensions, mortality, and the direction of his own life.
