Synopsis

Investigative reporter Rowena Price quits her newspaper after a political exposé is suppressed. When her childhood friend is murdered, Rowena suspects powerful advertising executive Harrison Hill, the woman's former lover. With help from a technically skilled colleague, she assumes false identities online and at Hill's company, entering a dangerous maze of deception, infidelity, blackmail, and hidden motives.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The story was originally set in New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina struck during pre-production in 2005, the screenplay was rapidly revised and relocated to New York City.
  • Principal photography took place in New York City and Manhattan from January through April 2006. Several scenes use recognizable downtown locations, including the World Trade Center complex.
  • The film was released in the United States on April 13, 2007, and runs approximately 109 minutes.
  • The movie's computer imagery includes a technical goof: several supposed IP addresses shown during the hacking scenes contain numbers higher than 255, which is not valid for standard IPv4 addresses.
  • Contemporary reports stated that multiple versions of the ending were filmed, with different characters identified as the murderer. This reflects the production's effort to protect the final twist.
  • Critics were sharply divided over the conclusion. Reviews frequently described the late revelation as abrupt or poorly foreshadowed, making the twist the film's most discussed feature.
