Synopsis

Washed-up 1980s pop star Alex Fletcher gets an unexpected chance to revive his career when a reigning young diva asks him to write a hit song. Struggling with the lyrics, Alex finds an unlikely collaborator in Sophie Fisher, the plant caretaker at his apartment. As they work under intense pressure, their creative partnership gradually develops into something more personal.

Factoids & Trivia

• The film opens with "PoP! Goes My Heart," a deliberately exaggerated 1980s music video for the fictional band PoP!, complete with period fashion, choreography, soft-focus lighting, and melodramatic pop-star poses.

• Adam Schlesinger, best known as a member of Fountains of Wayne, wrote most of the original songs for the film, including "Way Back into Love," "Meaningless Kiss," and "Don't Write Me Off."

• Martin Fry, lead singer of the 1980s band ABC, helped coach Hugh Grant's singing and dancing for the movie. Grant also learned the visible piano movements required for his performance scenes.

• "Dance With Me Tonight" was written by Clyde Lawrence, the teenage son of writer Marc Lawrence. Clyde also played piano on the soundtrack.

• The soundtrack reached No. 5 on Billboard's Top Soundtracks chart. The closing-credit songs "Invincible" and "Work to Do" were not included on the main soundtrack album.
