Synopsis

On his first mission as a newly promoted 00 agent, James Bond pursues a financier who funds international terrorism. The trail leads to a high-stakes Texas hold 'em tournament in Montenegro, where Bond must defeat Le Chiffre at the card table. With Treasury agent Vesper Lynd at his side, Bond faces betrayal, torture, and the emotional cost of becoming a spy.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Casino Royale was the twenty-first film in the Eon Productions James Bond series and the first to feature Daniel Craig as 007. It reintroduced Bond at the beginning of his career rather than continuing directly from the previous films.
  • The film is the third screen adaptation of Ian Fleming's 1953 novel. The earlier versions were a 1954 television production and the 1967 comedy.
  • The pre-title sequence is presented in black and white and is the only official Bond film that does not begin with the traditional gun barrel sequence.
  • The opening parkour chase was built around the movement of free-runner Sebastien Foucan. Its unusually physical style helped establish the film's more grounded approach to action.
  • The Aston Martin DBS crash was performed with an air cannon and produced seven barrel rolls, a Guinness World Record at the time.
  • The sinking Venetian house required a massive hydraulic set at Pinewood Studios. The production used practical effects and miniatures extensively instead of relying mainly on computer-generated imagery.
  • The title sequence uses playing cards, roulette imagery, and graphic patterns inspired by the cover of Fleming's original novel. Some of the animated figures were based on Craig's own movements.
  • "You Know My Name" was performed by Chris Cornell and co-written by Cornell and David Arnold. It was the first Bond theme to introduce Craig's interpretation of the character.
  • Principal photography took place in the Bahamas, the Czech Republic, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Karlovy Vary provided the exterior setting for Casino Royale, while interiors were constructed and filmed elsewhere.
  • The film received widespread critical praise for its reinvention of Bond and became the highest-grossing film in the series up to that point.
