Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Katy McLaughlin dreams of taking over her family's Wyoming horse ranch, but her father expects her brother to become his successor. After discovering a spirited black mustang in the mountains, Katy names her Flicka and secretly tries to tame her. Their bond challenges Katy's family, tests her courage, and forces her to prove that she belongs on the ranch.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The film is loosely based on Mary O'Hara's 1941 children's novel My Friend Flicka. Unlike the book's male protagonist, this adaptation centers on Katy, a teenage girl.
  • Flicka was filmed partly in and around Sheridan, Wyoming, helping give the ranch story its wide-open Western setting.
  • Production was interrupted on April 25, 2005, after a thoroughbred horse died in an accident at the Hansen Dam Equestrian Center in California. Investigations by Los Angeles Animal Services and American Humane found no negligence and classified the death as accidental.
  • The film marked Armie Hammer's feature-film debut.
  • During the wild-horse race sequence, Katy's disguised name is announced as "Ken," preserving the original protagonist's name from My Friend Flicka.
  • Released theatrically in the United States on October 20, 2006, the film earned approximately $21.9 million worldwide against an estimated $15 million budget.
  • The movie was followed by the direct-to-video sequels Flicka 2 in 2010 and Flicka: Country Pride in 2012.
