Synopsis
At fourteen, Austrian princess Marie Antoinette is sent to Versailles to marry the future Louis XVI and secure an alliance between Austria and France. Isolated by rigid court etiquette and relentless gossip, she seeks refuge in fashion, parties, gambling, and private pleasures. As public resentment grows and France approaches revolution, her sheltered world gradually begins to collapse.
Factoids & Trivia
- The film draws primarily from Antonia Fraser's biography Marie Antoinette: The Journey, emphasizing the queen's youth, isolation, and limited understanding of the political world around her.
- The production received special permission to film inside the Palace of Versailles. The crew was even allowed to use the Hall of Mirrors while it was undergoing restoration.
- Versailles scenes were supplemented with locations including the Paris Opera, Fontainebleau, Chateau de Chantilly, and the Belvedere in Vienna. Filming took place from January through April 2005.
- Costume designer Milena Canonero won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design. The wardrobe was developed with a deliberately pastel, confectionery color palette, inspired in part by Laduree macarons.
- Manolo Blahnik created hundreds of custom shoes for the production. A modern sneaker briefly appears among the period footwear as an intentional visual joke and a reminder that the film is an impressionistic interpretation rather than a strictly traditional historical drama.
- The soundtrack combines period compositions with post-punk and new-wave music by groups including New Order, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bow Wow Wow, and The Strokes. The contrast gives the court scenes the energy of a contemporary youth culture.
- Members of the band Phoenix appear as musicians in the film. Phoenix lead singer Thomas Mars later became Sofia Coppola's husband.
- The film competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. Its refusal to present a conventional historical epic helped make it one of the more distinctive modern screen portrayals of Marie Antoinette.
