Synopsis

After being honorably discharged from the Marines, John Triton takes a vacation with his wife, Kate. Their plans collapse when diamond thieves led by the ruthless Rome kidnap her during their escape. Triton survives an explosion and pursues the gang through the wilderness, using his combat training and determination to rescue Kate and bring the criminals to justice.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The Marine marked John Cena's first starring role in a feature film.
  • The project was originally developed with Stone Cold Steve Austin in mind for the lead role. Randy Orton was later considered, but John Cena ultimately took over the part.
  • Al Pacino was originally considered for the criminal Rome. After Pacino declined, Ray Liotta was considered before Robert Patrick was cast.
  • Filming took place in Queensland, Australia, during September and October 2005, although the movie was not released in theaters until October 13, 2006.
  • Cena trained with U.S. Marines while preparing for the role.
  • Footage used for the enemy base in the opening sequence came from Rambo III.
  • During a car-chase exchange, a character compares Triton to "The Terminator." The reference gains an extra layer because Robert Patrick, who plays Rome, portrayed the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
  • Produced through WWE Films and distributed by 20th Century Fox, the movie was one of WWE's early attempts to build a feature-film business around its wrestling stars.
  • The film launched The Marine franchise, which continued with five direct-to-video sequels.
