Synopsis

At an elite Massachusetts boarding school, four close friends hide a centuries-old secret: they are descendants of powerful colonial warlocks. As Caleb Danvers approaches his eighteenth birthday, a mysterious new student arrives and threatens to expose their legacy. The friends must confront a dangerous rival while struggling with the addictive nature and destructive consequences of their supernatural abilities.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The film was released in the United States on September 8, 2006, and opened at number one with approximately $8.9 million.
  • Although the story is set in Ipswich, Massachusetts, much of the production took place in Canada, including Bishop's University in Lennoxville, Quebec, as well as locations in Nova Scotia and Montreal.
  • The Danvers mansion seen from the exterior was actually a derelict water purification facility. The production added lighting and greenery to make it resemble an imposing family estate.
  • Top Cow Comics published a comic-book prequel connected to the film. Top Cow founder Marc Silvestri also served as an associate producer.
  • The film's supernatural mythology includes a built-in cost for using magic: excessive power can cause accelerated aging and physical deterioration.
  • The opening Screen Gems logo appears with its lettering engulfed in flames, giving the studio ident a visual connection to the film's supernatural subject matter.
  • Sebastian Stan performed his own stunts for the production.
  • Despite receiving generally negative critical notices, the film developed a lasting cult following among viewers of supernatural teen horror.
