Synopsis

After being rejected by every college he applies to, Bartleby Gaines creates a fake school, the South Harmon Institute of Technology, to ease his parents' worries. When rejected students begin enrolling in large numbers, Bartleby and his friends must turn the sham into a functioning alternative college while defending it from a rival institution and discovering what education can really mean.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Much of the comedy was improvised, with performers contributing jokes and gags during filming.
  • Adam Herschman's real parents appear as Glen's parents during the Parents' Day sequence.
  • The fictional school's acronym, S.H.I.T., provided the film with much of its deliberately juvenile humor. To retain a PG-13 rating, one use of an especially strong profanity from Lewis Black's character was bleeped.
  • Several campus scenes were filmed at Chapman University in Orange, California.
  • Universal promoted the film at San Diego Comic-Con with a public "Welcome" party featuring barbecue, beer, skateboarding demonstrations, and a wall where attendees could suggest subjects for the fictional school.
  • The film was released theatrically in the United States on August 18, 2006, and later received DVD and HD DVD releases.
