Synopsis

Gabriel Noone, a celebrated writer and late-night radio host, forms an intense telephone friendship with Pete, a teenage fan who claims to have survived severe abuse. As Gabriel becomes involved with Pete and his adoptive mother, troubling inconsistencies emerge about the boy's identity and circumstances. Driven to uncover the truth, Gabriel travels to Wisconsin, where reality and fiction become increasingly difficult to separate.

• The film is adapted from Armistead Maupin's 2000 novel of the same name. The book was inspired by Maupin's real-life connection with Anthony Godby Johnson, whose alleged memoir later became the subject of serious doubts about its authenticity.

• Maupin was one of the screenplay's writers and also served as an executive producer. Terry Anderson, Maupin's partner at the time, was among the other screenwriters.

• Maupin's real-life husband, Christopher Turner, makes a brief appearance early in the film as Lucien, a friend at a party.

• Montgomery, Wisconsin, the town central to the investigation, is fictional. The production used locations in New York and New Jersey.
