Synopsis

After a personal tragedy, Sarah joins five friends on a caving expedition in the Appalachian wilderness. When a collapse seals their route back to the surface, the group must navigate an unmapped underground system with dwindling supplies and rising tensions. Their situation becomes even more terrifying when they discover that they are not alone in the darkness.

Factoids & Trivia

• The cave interiors were filmed on constructed sets rather than in real caves. Production designer Simon Bowles created a maze of passages and chambers, with 21 separate cave sets reused through changes in camera angles, lighting, and set dressing.

• The filmmakers restricted the lighting whenever possible to sources carried by the characters, including headlamps, flashlights, and emergency flares. This helped preserve the film's unusually dark and claustrophobic visual style.

• The cave sequences were shot at Pinewood Studios after location work in Scotland and London. The production considered filming in actual caves too dangerous and impractical for the controlled, physically demanding shoot.

• The appearance of the crawlers was kept secret from the performers until the group first encountered them. Their initial reactions were reportedly genuine, contributing to the panic in that scene.

• Production was accelerated because the similarly themed film The Cave was already moving forward. Despite the effort to reach theaters first, both films were released in 2005.

• The original British release ends on a more pessimistic note than the American theatrical version. The U.S. distributor requested the shorter ending, while the darker original was later made available as an alternate version on home video.
