Synopsis

After years together, Brooke and Gary's relationship collapses over the everyday frustrations they have stopped addressing. Neither wants to leave their shared Chicago condo, turning the breakup into a petty domestic battle. As they date other people and try to reclaim their independence, both gradually confront how pride, resentment, and poor communication helped destroy a relationship that still matters to them.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The story originated with Vince Vaughn, Jeremy Garelick, and Jay Lavender. Vaughn wanted the film to be set in Chicago and to reflect the city's Midwest character.
  • Jennifer Aniston and Vaughn spent about two weeks rehearsing with the writers. They improvised scenes while Garelick and Lavender took notes, helping bring more of Brooke's perspective into the screenplay.
  • The film was shot in Chicago during the summer of 2005. Locations include Wrigley Field, the Green Mill cocktail lounge, Buckingham Fountain, and other recognizable city landmarks.
  • The opening meeting at a Cubs game establishes the film's Chicago identity while also setting up the hot-dog exchange that begins Brooke and Gary's relationship.
  • The concert sequence features the Old 97's, a Dallas-based alt-country band. Their appearance gives the movie a live-music setting that feels rooted in the characters' shared history.
  • Made for approximately $52 million, the film earned more than $205 million worldwide after its June 2, 2006, theatrical release.
  • The film's deliberately uncomfortable tone sets it apart from a conventional romantic comedy. Instead of treating the breakup as a temporary obstacle, it focuses much of its running time on resentment, territorial behavior, and the difficulty of separating a shared life.
