Synopsis

When her adopted daughter disappears after repeatedly sleepwalking and whispering the name Silent Hill, Rose Da Silva drives to the abandoned town in search of her. Separated from her husband and pursued by terrifying creatures, Rose discovers that the town's fog-shrouded streets conceal a decades-old crime, a fanatical religious community, and a supernatural reality shaped by a young girl's suffering.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The production spent about five years pursuing the rights to the video game series. To demonstrate his commitment, Christophe Gans sent Konami a video interview and independently filmed material inspired by the games.
  • Screenwriter Roger Avary drew inspiration from Centralia, Pennsylvania, a largely abandoned town associated with an underground coal mine fire. Its smoke, desolation, and long-running subterranean danger helped shape the film's version of Silent Hill.
  • The film combines elements from several games while most closely reflecting the atmosphere and mythology of the original Silent Hill. The production also worked with members of the game's development team to reproduce visual details from the series.
  • Many of the monsters were performed by professional dancers. Their training allowed the creatures to move with the unnatural, contorted physicality that the filmmakers wanted. The Dark Nurses' unsettling first movements were created by filming performers walking backward and reversing the footage.
  • Rose's clothing was designed to change gradually during the story, shifting from soft summer colors toward gray and finally red. Reports indicate that roughly 100 versions of the costume were prepared to support that progression.
  • Extensive practical sets were built for the production, including more than 100 interior sets. The visual effects were used prominently for the town's fog, ash, transitions into darkness, insects, and extensions of the physical locations.
  • The film was released in 2006 and earned more than $100 million worldwide. Although its initial critical response was generally unfavorable, it later developed a cult following and became one of the more enduring video game adaptations.
