Synopsis

As four Atlanta friends approach graduation, their lives begin to change. Rashad tries to balance romance, family responsibilities, and his plans for the future, while his friends confront dangerous choices and uncertain opportunities. Their local roller-skating rink, Cascade, remains the center of their social world as rivalries, secrets, and personal struggles test the bonds that have held them together.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The film was originally developed under the title "Jellybean," a nickname connected to Ant and the name of a Southwest Atlanta skating rink during the 1980s. Legal concerns led to the title being changed to "ATL."
  • The story grew from experiences associated with producers Dallas Austin and Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, who grew up in Atlanta. Screenwriter Tina Gordon Chism developed the screenplay from a story by Antwone Fisher.
  • Production took place in Atlanta over approximately six weeks and used 52 locations across the city. The summer shoot was conducted in temperatures that sometimes exceeded 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Cascade was designed to feel like more than a backdrop. The production team treated the rink as a character, contrasting its heightened, nostalgic atmosphere with the more difficult realities of the teenagers' lives.
  • The project marked the feature-film debut of rapper T.I., who was credited as Tip Harris, and was also an early film role for several members of the predominantly young ensemble.
  • Atlanta musicians appear throughout the film, including Monica, Bone Crusher, Killer Mike, Jazze Pha, Big Gipp, and Big Boi. Their presence helped reinforce the movie's local identity.
  • A planned soundtrack album evolved during production into work connected with T.I.'s album "King." Only "What You Know" and "Ride Wit Me" from that album appear in the film.
  • "ATL" opened in U.S. theaters on March 31, 2006. It earned more than $21 million worldwide and later developed a cult following, particularly among rap and Southern hip-hop audiences.
