Synopsis

Teenagers Hailey and Claire discover Aquamarine, a mermaid stranded in their beach club's swimming pool after a storm. Aqua promises to grant them a wish if they help her prove that true love exists. While they try to win over a handsome lifeguard, the girls also face jealousy, social pressure, and the possibility that their close friendship may soon be tested.

• The film is loosely based on Alice Hoffman's 2001 young adult novel of the same name.

• Principal photography took place in Queensland, Australia, from February through April 2005, with locations including the Gold Coast, Palm Beach, and Sea World.

• Aquamarine marked JoJo's feature-film debut.

• Sara Paxton's mermaid tail was reportedly more than 100 pounds and about eight feet long. Several versions were made by Australian creature-effects company JMB FX, including a cable-controlled tail for more detailed movements.

• Paxton originally auditioned for Cecilia, the antagonist, but pursued the title role because playing a mermaid had been a childhood dream. She also underwent intensive swimming training for the part.
