Synopsis

In a dystopian future, Violet Song Jat Shariff is a hemophage, a woman infected with a virus that gives her enhanced abilities while making her a target for extermination. After rescuing Six, a young boy whose blood may contain a cure, Violet becomes the hunted target of a powerful government and must protect him while uncovering the truth behind his importance.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The theatrical release was heavily shortened from an earlier cut that reportedly ran close to two hours. The PG-13 version runs approximately 88 minutes, while an unrated home-video version restores several minutes of material.
  • The production's editing history became part of the film's reputation. Reports indicate that Sony executives pushed for a more action-focused, less emotional version, and some visual-effects shots remained visibly unfinished in the released film.
  • The film uses the fictional martial art Gun Kata, a combat system based on statistical positioning, firearms, and close-quarters movement. It expands on the action concepts associated with the earlier film *Equilibrium*.
  • Yvonne Navarro wrote a 2006 novelization that adds background and character development. It also differs from the film in several story details, including a more ambiguous conclusion.
  • The film later inspired the Japanese anime series *Ultraviolet: Code 044*, released in 2008.
  • The DVD release included a four-part making-of documentary titled "UV Protection: The Making of Ultraviolet," along with an audio commentary featuring Milla Jovovich.
