Synopsis

New York journalist Sarah Huttinger returns to Pasadena for her sister's wedding and discovers that her family may have inspired the events of The Graduate. Troubled by the possibility that a wealthy family friend is her biological father, Sarah investigates the long-buried scandal while questioning her engagement, her family history, and the choices shaping her own future.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The film's premise draws on longstanding Pasadena rumors that the real-life exploits behind Charles Webb's novel The Graduate were based on actual people.
  • Screenwriter Ted Griffin was originally set to make his directorial debut with the project. After 12 days of filming, he was replaced, production was suspended, and Rob Reiner took over after revisions to the script, cast, and crew.
  • Principal photography took place from July 21 through October 26, 2004. Locations included Pasadena, Santa Rosa, San Francisco, New York City, and Warner Bros. studios in Burbank.
  • The horses shown at Beau's Napa Valley home were filmed at a private residence in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
  • A real magician performed the handkerchief trick that produces a white dove during the Casablanca-themed party.
  • The Yorkshire terrier mix appearing in the porch scene belonged to Kathy Bates.
  • Released on December 25, 2005, the film earned about $88.9 million worldwide against a reported $70 million production budget and was regarded as a commercial disappointment.
