Synopsis

A widowed naval officer with ten children falls in love with a widow raising eight children. After they marry, their eighteen children struggle to adjust to life as one enormous household, with rivalries, discipline problems, and competing family loyalties creating chaos. Gradually, the children form a bond, while the couple prepares to welcome another baby into their unconventional family.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The story was based on the real-life marriage of Frank Beardsley and Helen North, who married in 1961 after becoming widowed. Together, they formed a blended family of eighteen children.
  • Helen Beardsley's memoir, "Who Gets the Drumstick?", was published in 1965 and helped renew public interest in the family's story. The book was promoted alongside the film's theatrical release.
  • The project began under the working titles "The Beardsley Story" and later "His, Hers and Theirs" before becoming "Yours, Mine and Ours."
  • Filming took place at Desilu studios in Hollywood and on location in San Francisco and Alameda, California.
  • The film was produced by Desilu-Walden Productions and distributed by United Artists. Its reported final negative cost was approximately $2.5 million.
  • Despite mixed reviews in some major newspapers, the movie became a commercial success and had earned more than $11 million domestically by December 1968.
  • The real family's names were retained for the film's central characters and children, giving the comedy an unusual connection to its source material.
  • A remake starring Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo was released in 2005.
