Synopsis

In a poor American mining town, socially awkward teenager Dick Dandelion acquires a pistol and names it Wendy. Calling himself a pacifist, he forms the Dandies, a secret club of young outsiders who treat firearms as symbols of style, freedom, and companionship. Their elaborate rules keep violence at a distance, but pressure from the outside world gradually pushes the group toward a dangerous contradiction.

Factoids & Trivia

• The screenplay was written by Lars von Trier, who originally considered directing it himself. He eventually asked Thomas Vinterberg to bring the story to the screen while he pursued other projects.

• The film marked the first time Vinterberg made a feature from a script he had not written. He described the collaboration as especially interesting because their filmmaking approaches were very different.

• Although the story is set in a small coal-mining community in the southeastern United States, the production built the town on a studio lot in Copenhagen. The film was shot in Denmark and Germany.

• The production was an international co-production involving Denmark, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. The dialogue is entirely in English.

• The young performers spent approximately three weeks rehearsing and improvising in character before filming. This preparation helped establish the Dandies' group identity and rituals.

• The film premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and was later presented at the Moscow International Film Festival, where it received a Best Director award.
