Synopsis

In old age, Augustus recounts the violent and carefully calculated path that carried him from Octavian, the heir of Julius Caesar, to ruler of Rome. Speaking to his daughter Julia, he recalls his alliance with Agrippa, the defeat of Mark Antony and Cleopatra, and the political compromises that transformed the Roman Republic while placing his family under mounting strain.

• Imperium: Augustus was the first installment in the Imperium television film series, a project centered on major figures and events from classical Roman history.

• The production was filmed in Tunisia using large purpose-built sets. Contemporary Italian reporting described buildings reaching up to 15 meters in height, along with extensive studio space and thousands of costumes.

• The production reportedly went through 21 script versions before filming began. Shooting itself lasted approximately nine weeks.

• The film uses a framing structure in which the elderly Augustus explains his rise to power to Julia, allowing the story to move between his later years and the political struggles of his youth.
