After 13 years in prison, Herbert West resumes his experiments when young physician Howard Phillips arrives at the penitentiary. Phillips hopes to learn West's secret of restoring the dead, but the doctor's research has evolved into a new method for preserving consciousness in reanimated bodies. As the experiments spread through the prison, scientific ambition gives way to violent chaos.
