Synopsis

Meredith Morton expects a warm Christmas visit when her boyfriend Everett brings her home to meet the outspoken Stone family. Instead, her formal manners and guarded personality clash with the family's easy intimacy. As tensions rise and secrets surface, Meredith's arrival changes several relationships, forcing everyone to reconsider what they believe about love, loyalty, and belonging.

• The film grew from writer Thomas Bezucha's experience with a family member dating someone the family did not consider a good match. The original screenplay had the deliberately provocative working title "F---ing Hate Her" before the project was renamed *The Family Stone*.

• The ensemble spent several weeks rehearsing together before filming. This was intended to create the relaxed familiarity of a long-established family, including the casual interruptions and overlapping conversations that shape many of the holiday scenes.

• Because Thad communicates using American Sign Language, the performers portraying his family took part in an introductory ASL course during rehearsals. Their imperfect signing was retained as a reflection of a hearing family's informal, sometimes limited fluency.
