Synopsis

In 1818 Tennessee, the Bell family becomes the target of an unseen presence that torments teenage Betsy and unsettles the entire household. As strange attacks escalate, family secrets and old grievances surface. A present-day framing story connects Betsy's experiences to a modern child, while the film gradually questions whether the haunting is supernatural, psychological, or rooted in abuse.

Factoids & Trivia

• The film adapts Brent Monahan's novel *The Bell Witch: An American Haunting*, which fictionalizes the famous Bell Witch legend associated with Adams, Tennessee.

• Although promoted as being based on true events, the Bell Witch story is historically disputed. Its best-known account appeared decades after the alleged haunting, and no surviving firsthand records conclusively verify the events.

• It was an international co-production involving the United Kingdom, Canada, Romania, and the United States. Principal photography began in Romania in October 2004, with studio work taking place at MediaPro Studios near Bucharest.

• Rachel Hurd-Wood performed some of her own physical work, including the sequence in which Betsy is dragged up a staircase. She later described the scene as painful and exhausting because it required repeated physical takes while crying and screaming.

• The movie had different release versions. The United States theatrical version was issued in a shorter PG-13 cut, while an unrated home-video version restored or altered several moments of disturbing violence and sexualized imagery.

• The film was previewed at the AFI Film Festival on November 5, 2005, before its United States theatrical release on May 5, 2006.

• Made for an estimated $14 million, the film earned approximately $29.6 million worldwide. Critical reaction was generally negative, although some reviews noted the period setting, production design, and performances.
