Synopsis

During the Gulf War, Marine recruit Anthony "Swoff" Swofford endures brutal training before deploying to the deserts of Saudi Arabia. Assigned as a scout sniper, he and his unit face extreme heat, boredom, isolation, homesickness, and mounting psychological pressure. When combat finally appears within reach, military orders and circumstances leave the Marines struggling with the frustration of a war they barely get to fight.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The film is adapted from Anthony Swofford's 2003 memoir, *Jarhead: A Marine's Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles*.
  • Screenwriter William Broyles Jr. was a former Marine, a background that helped him approach the military setting from personal experience.
  • Much of the desert material was filmed in California's Imperial Valley and in Yuma, Arizona, with additional work at White Sands National Monument in New Mexico. These locations doubled for Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
  • The burning oil wells were created digitally rather than filmed as practical fires. The dark oil smeared across the Marines' faces was made with molasses.
  • A substantial amount of the dialogue was improvised to give the performances a more spontaneous and natural quality.
  • "Jarhead" is military slang associated with members of the U.S. Marine Corps. The title reflects both the characters' identity and the film's focus on Marine culture.
  • The film's three direct-to-video follow-ups - *Jarhead 2: Field of Fire*, *Jarhead 3: The Siege*, and *Jarhead: Law of Return* - are unrelated fictional stories rather than continuations of the original narrative.
