Synopsis

Recently divorced Manhattan professional Rafi Gardet begins a passionate relationship with David, a much younger painter. The romance becomes complicated when Rafi learns that David is the son of her psychoanalyst, Lisa Metzger. As the three struggle with conflicting loyalties, the relationship forces them to confront age, family expectations, religion, and the uneasy difference between love and long-term compatibility.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The title refers to the ages of the central couple: David is 23 and Rafi is 37, and both numbers are prime. The title also reflects the film's interest in the characters' different stages of romantic and sexual maturity.
  • The story's premise had been in writer Ben Younger's mind before he made Boiler Room. He later developed it into a romantic comedy about relationships that do not necessarily need to end in marriage or children to have lasting meaning.
  • Sandra Bullock was initially attached to play Rafi but left the project after seeking major script changes. Uma Thurman replaced her only about two weeks before principal photography began.
  • The film was originally given an R rating by the MPAA. After an appeal, it received a PG-13 for sexual content including dialogue and language.
  • The dog seen beside Lisa during the pastrami sandwich scene belonged to Meryl Streep in real life. Its name was Digby.
  • Produced for an estimated $22 million, the film earned approximately $67.9 million worldwide after its 2005 theatrical release.
