Synopsis

When police discover a grisly new crime scene, Detective Eric Matthews leads a raid on the hideout of the killer known as Jigsaw. Inside, he finds eight people trapped in a sealed house filled with poisonous gas, including his teenage son. As the victims search for antidotes and confront deadly tests, Matthews is forced into a tense psychological game with Jigsaw.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The screenplay developed from The Desperate, an unrelated script written by Darren Lynn Bousman that had struggled to find financing because of its similarities to Saw. Leigh Whannell later revised the material and adapted it into a sequel.
  • Production designer David Hackl reportedly built 27 sets on a single soundstage in Toronto over approximately three weeks.
  • The bathroom set from Saw was recreated for the sequel rather than simply reused.
  • The needle-pit trap required four days of work to replace the needle tips with safer fiber tips for filming.
  • To protect the ending, most of the cast were not given the final 25 pages of the script. Only the performers directly involved in the final sequence were told the complete version.
  • Five alternate endings were filmed to help keep the conclusion secret during production.
  • The film's soundtrack included Mudvayne's "Forget to Remember," which was also released as a single and received a related music video.
  • Made on an estimated $4 million budget, Saw II became a major commercial success and significantly expanded the series' theatrical profile.
