Factoids & Trivia

  • The film is based on id Software's Doom video-game series and draws heavily from the atmosphere and creature designs of Doom 3, which was released in 2004.
  • Principal photography took place in Prague, Czech Republic, including Barrandov Studios. Filming ran from October 18, 2004, through January 28, 2005.
  • The extended first-person shooter sequence was designed to reproduce the viewpoint and movement of the games. It reportedly took about 14 days to film after several months of preparation.
  • The BFG is stored in a locker marked "IDKFA." In the games, IDKFA is a cheat code that grants weapons, ammunition, keys, and other advantages.
  • Two working, vibrating versions of the BFG were built for the production. Both were reportedly kept by Dwayne Johnson.
  • The unrated version includes additional footage, including longer material in the first-person sequence, expanded character scenes, and more graphic moments involving the creatures.
  • The film opened in the United States on October 21, 2005. Made for an estimated $60 million, it earned approximately $58 million worldwide.
