Synopsis

After a bitter falling-out, responsible Philadelphia attorney Rose and her impulsive sister Maggie go their separate ways. Maggie eventually arrives at a Florida retirement community, where she discovers their estranged grandmother and begins reevaluating her life. As both sisters confront painful family secrets and personal insecurities, they slowly find a path toward forgiveness and reconciliation.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The film adapts Jennifer Weiner's 2002 novel of the same name. Susannah Grant wrote the screenplay, while Weiner chose not to adapt her own book.
  • The casting changed during development. Toni Collette was initially attached to play Maggie, with Sarah Michelle Gellar set to play Rose. After Gellar left the project, Collette took the role of Rose and Cameron Diaz became Maggie.
  • Collette gained approximately 25 pounds before filming to reflect Rose's appearance, then lost weight during production as the character's circumstances changed.
  • In the novel, Maggie steals a purebred pug. The film instead uses a mixed-breed dog, a choice intended to encourage audiences to consider adopting shelter animals rather than seeking a particular breed. The dog was later adopted by its trainer.
  • Weiner makes a brief cameo in the Italian Market sequence, appearing with her agent behind Rose and Amy. Weiner's sister and grandmother also appear in the film.
  • During Maggie's MTV audition, the teleprompter mentions an upcoming Eminem music video. The reference connects the film to the filmmaker's earlier Eminem-related movie, "8 Mile."
  • Principal photography took place in Philadelphia, Florida, and Pasadena. The production used Philadelphia landmarks including the Italian Market and the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
  • The film premiered as a gala presentation at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival before opening in the United States on October 7, 2005.
  • "In Her Shoes" earned approximately $83.7 million worldwide against a reported $35 million production budget.
