Synopsis

A successful R&B singer returns to Atlanta after learning that his father, a respected bishop, is seriously ill. Back in the church community he left behind, he must confront family tensions, old rivalries, and the emptiness behind his glamorous career. His homecoming gradually becomes a spiritual reckoning about faith, forgiveness, responsibility, and the meaning of true success.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The film reworks the biblical Parable of the Prodigal Son as a contemporary story set within the worlds of R&B music and Black evangelical Christianity.
  • Produced by Rainforest Films and distributed by Screen Gems, the movie was shot in and around Atlanta, giving its church scenes a strong local and community-centered atmosphere.
  • Gospel music is central to the production rather than merely serving as background. The film features performances connected with artists including Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, Donnie McClurkin, Hezekiah Walker, and Martha Munizzi.
  • Kirk Franklin contributed original music, while Stanley A. Smith composed the film score. The soundtrack combines contemporary gospel, choir arrangements, and secular R&B material.
  • The film was made on an estimated $4 million budget and earned approximately $15.8 million domestically after its October 7, 2005, theatrical release.
  • Its music-focused approach helped make the movie appealing to church audiences, with some theatrical screenings taking on the atmosphere of participatory gospel events.
  • The Gospel received four award nominations, including Black Reel Award nominations for acting and for the screenplay.
  • A related concert film, The Gospel Live, was released on home video later in 2005, extending the project's emphasis on contemporary gospel performance.
