Synopsis

In the summer of 1978, Chicago teenager Xavier and his friends lose their neighborhood roller rink and venture to the upscale Sweetwater rink. Feeling out of place among its established skating stars, Xavier enters a major competition while coping with family tension, grief, friendship, and first love. The rink becomes a place where he can mature, honor his past, and find his own confidence.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The film was released by Fox Searchlight Pictures on September 23, 2005, and was made on an approximately $10 million budget.
  • Although the story is set in 1978 Chicago, production used several Illinois locations, including the Fleetwood Roller Rink in Summit and the Lynwood Sport Center in Lynwood.
  • The title refers to "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll," the 1979 disco-funk song by Vaughan Mason & Crew. The song appears on the film's soundtrack.
  • The soundtrack album was released on September 20, 2005. It combines period soul, funk, disco, and R&B with later recordings and features music associated with artists including Chaka Khan, Earth, Wind & Fire, Chic, Donna Summer, Parliament, and Kool & the Gang.
  • Ten percent of the film's opening-weekend gross was donated to relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
  • The production leaned heavily into 1970s styling, music, clothing, and television references to make the roller rink feel like a self-contained youth culture rather than simply a backdrop.
  • Several songs and visual details do not strictly match the 1978 setting. Among the anachronisms noted are songs released after that summer, modern vehicles, later slang, and light-up skate wheels.
