Factoids & Trivia
- Beauty Shop is a spin-off of the Barbershop series. Gina Norris first appeared in Barbershop 2: Back in Business, and this film moves her story from Chicago to Atlanta.
- Queen Latifah said MGM approached her about developing the spin-off. She and producer Shakim Compere also contacted Ice Cube to ask for his approval before proceeding.
- The film was designed as a female-centered counterpart to Barbershop, focusing on the conversations, rivalries, and community atmosphere of a Black beauty salon.
- Gina's entrepreneurial model is inspired in part by Madam C.J. Walker, the pioneering Black hair-care businesswoman whose success made her an important historical figure in the beauty industry.
- Filming took place in both Atlanta and California. Hair department head Sterfon Demings noted that Atlanta's humidity made certain hairstyles difficult to maintain during production.
- The video store beside Gina's salon is called "The Big Picture," a reference to The Big Picture, a 1989 film starring Kevin Bacon.
- Beauty Shop was the final Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film released on VHS.
