Synopsis

After his wife's sudden death, architect Jonathan Rivers is contacted by a stranger who claims to communicate with the dead through Electronic Voice Phenomenon, or EVP. Jonathan begins recording static from televisions, radios, and other devices, hoping to hear his wife again. The messages initially offer comfort, but they soon reveal a threatening presence reaching into the world of the living.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The film centers on Electronic Voice Phenomenon, the paranormal belief that voices from the dead can be detected in recordings or electronic interference.
  • Although the story is set in Washington state, production took place primarily in Vancouver, British Columbia. Filming was carried out from September through October 2003.
  • White Noise opened in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom on January 7, 2005. Its release came during the traditionally quiet post-holiday period.
  • The film became a notable commercial success despite its modest estimated budget of $10 million. It earned more than $91 million worldwide.
  • Its unexpected opening-weekend performance helped draw attention to January as a viable release window for horror films.
  • A stand-alone sequel, White Noise: The Light, was released internationally in 2007 and received a direct-to-video release in the United States in 2008.
