Synopsis

A gifted New York taxi driver with dreams of racing becomes entangled with an inept police detective after a bank robbery. When the detective loses access to his squad car, he relies on the cabbie's extraordinary driving skills to pursue a gang of Brazilian thieves. Their chaotic partnership gradually develops into an effective crime-fighting team as they uncover the robbers' unusual getaway method.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Taxi is an American remake of the 1998 French action comedy of the same name, created by Luc Besson. It is also considered the fourth film in the broader Taxi franchise.
  • The film was produced by Besson's EuropaCorp in partnership with Robert Simonds Productions, with 20th Century Fox handling its worldwide theatrical distribution.
  • Gisele Bundchen made her feature-film debut in Taxi as one of the bank robbers. Her casting connected the movie's criminal team with the fashion world, since the robbers pose as models.
  • The production had an estimated $25 million budget and earned approximately $71 million worldwide. Despite that commercial return, the film received largely negative reviews from critics.
  • The finale incorporates NASCAR imagery and a cameo appearance by racing driver Jeff Gordon, reflecting the taxi driver's ambition to become a professional race car driver.
  • Jimmy Fallon's rendition of "This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)" during a crisis became one of the movie's most frequently remembered comic set pieces and earned a Teen Choice Award nomination for "Rockstar Moment."
