Synopsis
In the fictional West Texas town of Dillon, high school football shapes the lives of players, families, teachers, and coaches. The series follows the Dillon Panthers and later the East Dillon Lions as they confront pressure, ambition, class divisions, relationships, and uncertain futures. Though football remains central, the drama's larger focus is the community surrounding the game.
Factoids & Trivia
- The supplied IMDb ID, tt0758745, identifies the television series that ran from 2006 to 2011, rather than the 2004 feature film with the same title.
- The series was inspired by H.G. Bissinger's 1990 nonfiction book, *Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream*, and followed the 2004 film adaptation.
- Dillon is fictional, but the series was filmed in and around Austin, Texas. Local schools, stadiums, neighborhoods, and businesses helped give the production its grounded regional atmosphere.
- The production used a loose, documentary-style approach, with handheld cameras and multiple cameras running during scenes. This helped preserve spontaneous performances and made the show feel less conventionally staged than most network dramas.
- The series received a 2006 Peabody Award for presenting high school football as a gateway into stories about family, community, adolescence, and social pressure.
- The second season ended after 15 episodes rather than its originally planned full order because production was affected by the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike.
