Synopsis

Peter Parker struggles to balance college, work, romance, and his responsibilities as Spider-Man. When scientist Otto Octavius becomes the dangerous Doctor Octopus after a failed fusion experiment, Peter must confront a powerful new enemy while questioning whether he can continue as a hero. His personal crisis deepens as Mary Jane prepares to marry someone else and Peter's powers begin to fail.

Factoids & Trivia

• The production used Chicago's elevated railway for the climactic train sequence, even though the story is set in New York. A real 2200-series train car was used for filming, with sixteen cameras capturing background material.

• The train battle was among the first major sequences filmed and became one of the production's most demanding effects showcases. Sony Pictures Imageworks created fully digital versions of Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus for portions of the action.

• The film won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 77th Academy Awards in 2005. It was also nominated for Sound Editing and Sound Mixing.

• Spider-Man 2 had an estimated production budget of $200 million and earned more than $788 million worldwide during its theatrical release.

• The Spider-Man costume was revised with richer colors, a more refined spider emblem, and a segmented muscle suit intended to improve movement.

• An extended version titled Spider-Man 2.1 was released on DVD in 2007. It adds approximately eight minutes through new, extended, and alternate scenes.

• The two boys who return Spider-Man's mask during the train sequence are Tobey Maguire's half-brothers.
