Synopsis

Escaped convict Richard B. Riddick is drawn into a conflict with the Necromongers, a brutal interstellar empire conquering world after world. Seeking answers about his Furyan heritage, Riddick joins a desperate group of survivors and confronts both the invaders and the harsh planet Crematoria. His journey expands the mythology introduced in Pitch Black while forcing him to choose between survival, vengeance, and responsibility.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The Chronicles Of Riddick is a sequel to Pitch Black (2000) and the second entry in the Riddick film series.
  • Universal Pictures pursued the sequel after Vin Diesel's rising popularity in The Fast and the Furious. The substantially larger production budget was reported at approximately $105 million to $120 million.
  • Filming took place in Vancouver and Burnaby, British Columbia, with additional miniature photography completed at New Deal Studios in Los Angeles.
  • Vin Diesel personally wanted Judi Dench for the role of Aereon. To persuade her, he reportedly sent such a large bouquet of flowers to her theater dressing room that it could not fit up the stairs.
  • Linus Roache improvised the Purifier's reflective line about performing unbelievable acts for a faith that was never his own. Writer David Twohy kept the moment in the finished film.
  • The Lensor creatures were performed by movement specialists, including some performers associated with Cirque du Soleil.
  • Home video releases included a longer unrated director's cut, while television received a hybrid version combining material from the theatrical and extended editions.
  • The film expanded the franchise into other media, including the animated bridge film The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury and the well-regarded Xbox game The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.
  • Although it earned more worldwide than any other Riddick feature at the time, its large production cost and mixed critical reception made it a commercial disappointment.
