Synopsis

An FBI profiler is sent to Montreal to investigate a series of murders in which the killer assumes the identities of his victims. As the investigation unfolds, the evidence points toward a methodical predator who has spent years erasing his own identity. The case becomes increasingly personal when a witness joins the inquiry and the killer's latest deception draws the profiler dangerously close.

• The film is loosely adapted from Michael Pye's 1999 novel. The book's equivalent investigator is a British museum curator, while the killer is originally Dutch, and much of the novel takes place in England and Portugal.

• Although the story is set mainly in Montreal, several recognizable sequences were filmed in Quebec City. The Chateau Frontenac and the bridge seen in the film are among the locations that do not belong to Montreal.

• Some police characters speak with accents from France rather than French-Canadian accents, a detail that has been noted as an inaccuracy in the film's Montreal setting.

• A deleted scene involved the investigator driving an old pickup when a falling tree branch smashed the windshield. Repeated attempts to capture the shot reportedly used up the remaining replacement windshields available for that model in North America.

• This was Angelina Jolie's second film in which she played a law-enforcement character investigating a serial killer, following "The Bone Collector" (1999). Both films were adapted from novels.

• The score was composed by Philip Glass, whose restrained, atmospheric music supports the film's emphasis on identity, obsession, and psychological uncertainty.
