Synopsis

After graduating from high school, Ohio teenager Scotty Thomas discovers that his German pen pal, Mieke, is actually a young woman he has fallen for. Joined by his best friend and twin siblings, Scotty travels across Europe to find her, encountering cultural misunderstandings, romantic complications, rowdy football supporters, and a series of increasingly outrageous misadventures.

Factoids & Trivia

• The screenplay was originally developed under the title "Ugly Americans." DreamWorks later retitled it "EuroTrip," partly to connect it with the studio's earlier travel comedy "Road Trip."

• Although the story moves through several European countries, much of the production was filmed in Prague and other parts of the Czech Republic. Prague locations and visual effects were used to stand in for cities including London, Bratislava, Paris, and Rome.

• An especially controversial scripted sequence involving the Anne Frank House was never filmed. The idea was replaced by the Amsterdam dominatrix sequence after studio concerns.

• The song "Scotty Doesn't Know," performed in the film by the fictional band Lustra, became one of the movie's most recognizable cultural leftovers. Matt Damon appears in the cameo as the singer performing it.

• The film received an R-rated theatrical release, while the home-video edition also included an unrated extended version with additional material.

• "EuroTrip" earned less than its reported production budget during its theatrical run, but gained a stronger following through DVD and home-video circulation. It is now commonly regarded as a cult comedy.
