Synopsis

Set in 1975, this prequel follows the first case assigned to mismatched Bay City detectives David Starsky and Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson. Their investigation into a sophisticated cocaine operation leads them through undercover work, police suspension, personal friction, and spectacular car chases. With help from street informant Huggy Bear, the partners must repair their damaged relationship and stop a powerful criminal before the case turns deadly.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The film is a prequel to the 1975-1979 television series and deliberately reverses the personalities of the original characters: Starsky is the rigid, rule-bound detective, while Hutch is the more relaxed and opportunistic partner.
  • The red-and-white Ford Gran Torino was central to the film's visual identity, echoing the television series and its enduring association with the franchise.
  • Snoop Dogg's powder-blue Lincoln was used for Huggy Bear's car. The production had been searching for a suitable vehicle when Snoop revealed that he already owned one with the right appearance.
  • The shoulder holsters and small towels worn by the leads were recreated from a promotional image of the original television stars.
  • The performers who played Starsky and Hutch in the television series appear in the film's closing scene, creating a direct connection between the remake and its source material.
  • Principal photography took place in Southern California, including Los Angeles, San Pedro, Santa Monica, and Azusa, using locations that reinforced the period setting.
