Synopsis

Successful New York restaurateur Will Keane has built his life around brief romances and emotional distance. His outlook changes when he falls for Charlotte Fielding, a much younger woman with a serious heart condition. As their relationship deepens through the city's autumn season, Will must confront his selfish past and the limited time they may have together.

• Joan Chen's theatrical version was substantially re-edited by MGM, reportedly against her wishes. Chen later said she preferred her original cut, which had received a warmer response during test screenings.

• The recut removed a nude scene featuring Winona Ryder, which would have been her first such scene in a major film.

• The production filmed in Manhattan from September 13 through November 17, 1999. Locations included Rockefeller Plaza, Central Park's Wollman Skating Rink, the West Village, and other recognizable New York landmarks.

• MGM did not arrange advance press screenings. The studio cited concerns that critics might reveal the film's ending, while Richard Gere publicly argued that withholding the film damaged its credibility.
