Synopsis

In the 27th century, humanity's survival depends on stopping the Kilrathi from reaching Earth. Young pilot Christopher Blair and his hotshot wingman Maniac are assigned to the carrier Tiger Claw, where they join a desperate mission to recover navigation data and prevent an enemy assault. As the crew races across hostile space, Blair must confront his mysterious heritage and prove himself in battle.

Factoids & Trivia

• Wing Commander is loosely based on the space-combat video game series created by Chris Roberts. The movie was developed after Digital Anvil acquired the feature-film rights from Electronic Arts in late 1997.

• The film introduced the Pilgrims, humans with an innate ability to navigate through space. This concept had not previously appeared in the Wing Commander games.

• Principal photography took place in Luxembourg in 1998, while post-production was completed in Austin, Texas.

• Mark Hamill, who played Christopher Blair in several Wing Commander games and voiced him in Wing Commander Academy, provides the voice of Blair's onboard computer, Merlin.

• The theatrical cut removed a subplot involving Admiral Wilson as a traitor, along with a related knife fight. The surviving footage contains small continuity traces of the deleted material, including Blair's bandaged hand.

• The film was released in the United States on March 12, 1999. Made on an estimated $30 million budget, it earned approximately $11.6 million worldwide and became a notable commercial disappointment.

• Chris Roberts later acknowledged that the film's visual style moved too far away from the established look of the games, partly because he wanted to avoid making the movie appear too similar to Star Wars.
