Synopsis

During the Bosnian War, British and American television journalists report from besieged Sarajevo, documenting violence while trying to maintain professional distance. Their perspective changes after they discover an orphanage near the front line. British reporter Michael Henderson becomes determined to help one child escape the city, forcing the journalists to confront the limits of observation, the responsibilities of witness, and the human cost of the conflict.

• The screenplay adapts journalist Michael Nicholson's book "Natasha's Story," based on his experiences covering the Bosnian War and helping a girl from a Sarajevo orphanage.

• The filmmakers wanted Henderson's story to serve as an entry point into the wider experience of Sarajevo, rather than turning the film into a conventional rescue drama centered only on one foreign reporter.

• Filming began in June 1996, roughly six months after the peace agreement ended the fighting. The production worked in Sarajevo while the city was still dealing with damaged infrastructure, difficult travel conditions, limited water supplies, and uncleared land mines.

• Sarajevo locations were supplemented by work in Croatia, Macedonia, and England. Some interiors were filmed in Macedonia as a contingency in case postwar conditions made continued filming in Sarajevo impossible.

• Although the film frequently resembles a documentary, only about ten minutes consists of actual news footage. The material is distributed in short sections throughout the fictional scenes.
